Tropical paradise, a must-see if you're in the Miami area...

Vizcaya Museum & Gardens - A Miami Gem...

We hope you enjoyed our video of a day at Vizcaya Museum and Gardens! When we first moved to Miami we were always in the South Beach area. It's all we knew from the many spring breaks we spent on Collins Ave. and Ocean Drive. The first thing we wanted to do when we moved here was to explore more of the Miami area that we'd never seen before. One of our favorite things to do is visit museums together and lucky for us there are several options close by. A friend of ours suggested we visit Vizcaya Museum & Gardens and all I can say is ...... WooooW.

Museum History & Attributes

The first amazing thing to note about this museum is that it wasn't originally a museum at all. It was multi-millionaire James Deerings' (1859-1925) winter home. Mind blown! The Italian villa inspired home was originally built between the years 1914-1922 and is truly a sight to behold. Situated right on Biscayne Bay in Coconut Grove Miami, the main estate spans over 38,000 square feet and has 54 rooms inside. Yes 54 rooms including several bedrooms, guest suites, a library, a music room, several reception areas, a dining room, a breakfast room, a kitchen area, a courtyard, two elevators, and a lower level swimming pool underneath the home. Let's not forget one of it's most beautiful features, the plush maze-like European inspired gardens and wildlife that surrounds the home. Vizcaya is nothing short of extravagant! Even the best vision board couldn't capture the reality and majesty of this estate. It can take several hours just to see the vast collection of Italian artifacts and paintings throughout the home. Matt and I were so enamored by everything we saw that it took us two visits to feel satisfied that we had seen everything that this home had to offer .

The Gardens...

Vizcaya's gardens are just jaw-dropping. It's widely known as one of the most extravagant gardens in the United States. The subtropical landscape is filled with trimmed hedges that create a very elegant maze like design that is an amazing sight from above. There are several water fountains, sculptures, and lush tropical plants all over. James Deering had a preference for orchids so you will see many of these delicate yet vibrant plants throughout the garden. If that isn't enough, the view of Biscayne Bay is just steps away from the garden and captures a one of a kind Miami skyline. In my opinion the gardens have some of the best photo opps in Miami. When you visit don't be surprised if you see several photographers capturing romantic and/or celebratory photos on the grounds. It makes for a fairy-tale like wedding venue as well.

How to visit....

Vizcaya Museum and Gardens is open Wednesday through Monday 9:30am- 4:30pm. We would highly recommend going during the winter months or very early in the morning during the summers. It gets very humid in Miami and we almost melted in the gardens when we visited in July. The heat can be a bit distracting when you're trying to take in all the beauty. Other than that be sure to bring your camera! I promise you're going to want to take 1000+ photos. More information on admission rates, directions, parking, and the history of Vizcaya can be found on the museums website You can also catch a great deal depending on the time of the year by checking here.

Thanks for stopping by! We hope you have a chance to visit this beautiful estate. It truly is one of Miami's most sacred gems...

Peace, Love, and Luggage!
